Zin is still our largest doe and is following in her dam Chardonnay's
hoof steps. She has taken to the milk stand well and has the biggest
orifices in our milk string currently. She has large super easy to milk
teats and her texture is like butter! She's my favorite right now to
milk. Her production isn't too bad. I am weighing milk daily though we
haven't officially went on test this year. I don't think I will until I
am using the milk machine daily. I've set it up once to use and it
was too tight (way too little space) in the old doe barn to use it so I
haven't used it since. Now that we're moved into the new doe barn and
have tons of space, I plan to bring it out again and give it another
try. So if that works out we will go on milk test next year.
I didn't milk Zin's dam Chardonnay as a yearling first
freshener and she dam raised her kids both as a first freshener and
second freshener. So I don't know if this line is just slow to mature or
not. I know as a second freshener she was making WAY too much milk for
her twin HUGE does to eat so I believe Zin's production will really
pick-up next year. She's definitely got the size and frame to produce
more. So we'll see when she freshens next year! |
Zin's first freshening udder on 3-24-17 at 3 weeks
fresh, with 12 hours fill.
Zin is currently milking about 3lbs a day. She has EXCELLENT texture and huge
open orifices.
Zin's first freshening udder. Left is just before
kidding. Right is A week into her first lactation.
1-18-17 Zin is due in a little less than a month!
5-6-16 Zin is typically pretty
camera shy.
So her lovely face is the best I can get right now.

I had planned to go on milk test in 2017, but with
the stresses of kidding season, milking and bottle
raising (when we didn't set-out to do that
initially) and the new barn work having to be
finished to get the herd moved into, testing just
didn't happen. I need the milk machine in order to
stay on test the length of time required too and
currently I'm still hand milking. So the plan is to
get the room done in the new barn for milking, get
the milk machine up and running and the goats
acclimated to it this year and then 2018 go on
official milk test through both MDGA & TMGR. In the
meantime, like in previous years, I keep detailed
milk charts for each goat and I weigh milk each
milking. I will continue to do that and record it on
each doe's page and next year work towards official
records and milk stars! |
